Almost a year ago, Bentley rolled into Geneva with the EXP 9, a bathtub of an SUV concept that represented the marque’s first foray into the consumer truck game. So with Geneva Auto Show rapidly approaching this year, we expected to see a more fleshed-out concept of the EXP 9, or perhaps even a production unveiling.
No dice, says Bentley Chief of Design Luc Donckerwolke. The Volkswagen Group executive has put the kibosh on the SUV, sending designer Sang Yup Lee & co. back to the drawing board with the command to create a sportier, more contemporary interpretation of a 4×4 than the boxy, though elegant, EXP 9. He’s also looking for a reinvention of Bentley’s Continental GT, which despite the brand’s luxurious pedigree, is often appropriated by buyers with far different tastes.
