Call it The Opium Award . Damien Hirst, that Englishman whose art (and person) never fully steps out from beneath the shadow of controversy, was tapped by the Brit Awards (like the UK’s Grammy Awards) to make over its statuette for the 2013 show. In predictable-yet-amusing fashion, Hirst went ahead and made it into his latest spot painting.
The artist has long been criticized by detractors for not painting his now-famous “spot” series himself (the artist openly admits that he had interns paint the majority of those works.) We wonder if he painted the statuettes himself this time.
The Brit Awards are announced on February 20th. For more information, check its website.
